The Question: Women's Safety in Delhi

Some newspapers have adopted the tendency to not ruin your day by posting news on front page which we even don't want to hear in our dreams. Murders were common among them but there was one more crime about which I had never heard in my childhood. Has it started after I became an adult - Yes, that is Rape. The word itself brings boil to our blood. Ironically, whenever a girl is raped or molested, we Indians are so angry that next day, we leave our offices or bunk our colleges to attend the most important march in history of India after Dandi march, The Candle March. The poor girl won't get justice if I change my filthy perspective towards girls but will get it once I light a Rs. 10 candle. Funny fact is I have seen some of my classmates attending such marches just to spot some girls and pass some sleazy comments. "Bhaiya agar hasi toh fasi".

But it seemed majority of these rape incidents have one thing in common - place of occurence is Delhi. I used to think either this city has never seen girls or their minds are rotten pieces of garbage. When asked with people of Delhi, they bluntly replied "We people are not like this, it is those people coming from Bihar, UP, Rajasthan and Haryana and shaming our city." Once the blame game starts, it rolls like a ball between political personalities and those from entertainment industry - "These things never used to happen during our rule or we make content provoking such things because people like to see it." There is a heavy need for making strict laws and our judiciary fast more than ever. This is not the story of the Capital alone, every city or town is paying the price for such heinous crimes against women. But it is Delhi which stays in the center of attraction. The maximum Government can do is install some CCTV cameras and increase police force. But it is our conscience we have to answer at the end of day.
Before packing pepper spray in my daughter's bag, I would prefer to teach my son some manners on how to treat a woman.
